Of course Mikey is Little Mike one of my three year olds that I was bloggin' about the other day. He actually LOVES the turf. Little Mike went wire-to-wire today in an allowance optional claiming $50,000 non-winners of two other than at Belmont in a one turn mile turf race. This was Mikey's third win in a row all on the turf. After four sprints on dirt, trainer Alan Iwinski decided to stretch Little Mike out and switch to turf. Great move Mr. Iwinski and Mikey sure does winski.
I'm so proud of this young kid if you can't tell. In the three races on turf, he has never trailed at any point-of-call. Today he opened up early, clicking off the first three quarters in about 24 second each and came home in the final quarter in 23.65 on a course that was listed as 'good' stopping the clock at 1:35.75! With the winners share of the $56k purse, Mikey has now earned $113,000 in just seven races. Next up has to be a stakes race.
Now you breeders don't start thinking that I am just a turf sire. Actually, my average earnings per starter for turf is $14,155 according to the good folks at Thoroughbred Times. Mikey is sure going to raise this average. At the same time, my average earnings per starter on dirt is $18,400 and $19,279 on synthetic. Consider me ver-sa-tile! Gotta go, Zman and I are going to make fun of the yearlings when they get turned out tonight.

It's Been Quite A Year
While it seems like only yesterday, just over a year ago I moved from Florida to Indiana to Foot Fall Farm. I get here and all my new buddies, Killer (Killenuale), Goody (Goods), Zman (Zavata), and Maybe (Mr. Mabee) are giving me a hard time about my coat, actually the lack there of. Man, where I came from we didn't need a coat. My new buddies kept saying "turtle, turtle" and I had no clue as to what they meant. That is until I saw my first Indiana turtle, then I got it. But I survived the winter thanks to blanket that nice barn guy, Larry, got me. Through the winter and spring, I bred 17 mares, top 20 in the state, and kept an eye on the trades for how my kids were doing.
In February, one of my three-year old boys, Raise the Bridle, wins the $100,000 Borderland Derby at Sunland Park at 1 1/16th at 16 to 1. OK, win is not exactly the right term. There might have been some bumping in the stretch and he was DQ'd to second. But hey, as my Indiana friends say, 'if your not rubbin' it's not racin', right?' Anyway, Raise the Bridle is out of a Gulch mare.
In late May, another one of my two-year old boys, The Flying Whizzer, and I swear I had nothing to do with his name, breaks his maiden at Colonial Downs on the turf. Then, in July at Colonial he finishes second in the $50,000 Chenery Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs. A month later, "Whizzer" goes over to Monmouth to take a shot at the $100,000 Continential Mile on their turf course. This was crazy. He dead heats for second, but the other horse was DQ'd to fourth. Unbelievable! The Flying Whizzer is out of the Forest Wildcat mare, Perfectly Wild. Using my big bro as a proxy on eNicks, this Storm Cat cross with me is an A+++.
What's really got me exicited this fall, other than thinking about Indiana mares, is another one of my three-year old boys, Little Mike. Mike decides, or maybe his trainer decided, I'm not sure, to run in a maiden special weight races at Monmouth for one of those $72,000 purses. He wins going a mile on turf in 1:33.67! Then, in late September Little Mikey blows away an allowance field at Monmouth in a mile and 1/16th turf contest in 1:40.31. Next up for my man Little Mike is an allowance field at Belmont Park this Thursday. Go Mikey! He is out of a Wavering Monarch mare, Hay Jude, yes, Hay Jude, too funny. This one's an A+ on eNicks.
Hey, I just found out that one of my girls, Rock 'n' Roll Gal, out of the Seattle Slew mare My Working Gal, is hip #3380 in the Keeneland November Sale. She is one fast filly having set a track record at Indiana Downs going 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.00. She's won over $90,000 in her career. You know what would make some sense, maybe breeding to a few more Seattle Slew mares next year. This is the same cross as First Defence. I'll be ready.
